Thank You!

24 people took my bookbinding class today.  What great books and embellishments!  Everyone had their own theme and used whatever embellishments they could die-cut so that each book was unique to the maker.  Such fun!  Claudine Helmuth's Sticky Back Canvas is the perfect way to put these mini-books together.  I promise, our next shipment is on the way!

FYI:

I KNOW Christmas is the 25th and I put the 28th on my tag

however, the 28th of December is Gotcha Day for us,

the day we adopted Beau.  So on many of my projects,

when I'm reminded of Christmas,

I think of that extraordinary Christmas gift

we received almost 25 years ago!

One more FYI:

Saturday, June 20 we will begin working on

Tim Holtz 2008 Christmas Tags

(with permission from "the man himself")

Usually, I hold these classes the last Saturday of the month,

however this is a date change for June only

as I have an opportunity to go to Texas with the cuties

from

Ten Seconds Studio

and will return as a certified instructor for Ten Seconds Studio.

YIPPEE!

Remembering our Heroes

And I'm proud to be an American,

where at least I know I'm free,

and I won't forget the men who died,

who gave that right to me

and I'll proudly stand next to him to defend her still today,

'cuz there ain't no doubt I love this land, God bless the USA.

Waaaayyyyy back in 2001

I created this portfolio for my husband that included photos of his trip with friends to a private ranch in Texas.  It was a dream trip for him.  Wanted to make it a rugged, he-man "album".  Here it is:

Just started working on another one with a totally different theme.  Can't wait until it's finished!

Here are the directions . . .

for the altered canvas displayed at For Keeps Sake Scrapbook.  Canvas' and glass tubes are available there (as well as the grungeboard and Wendy Vecchi/Studio 490 flower stamps).  Feel free to take a photo of the sample.

Prepare Canvas:

  • Using the "raw" canvas and your favorite color paint dabber, make random strokes of paint on the canvas (in a vertical motion).  Be careful NOT to cover the entire canvas.
  • Let paint dry.
  • Using a Ranger/Tim Holtz Ink Applicator, ink canvas all over with Tim Holtz Distress ink.
  • Let dry.
  • Once dry, spray a cloth with water until just damp.  Run cloth over the paint and ink, removing some of the Distree Ink.
  • You will end up with a wood-look effect.

PS:  I used Juniper Dabbers and Brushed Corduroy Distress Ink (available at For Keeps Sake Scrapbook.

Prepare Grungeboard:

  • With Ranger's Jet Black or Coffee Archival Ink, ink Studio 490 flower stamps.  Note: it's important to use this ink because it is waterproof, therefore easiest to use with Tim Holtz Distress Inks (which are water based).  Press onto Grungeboard.
  • Ink arrow stamp with Archival Ink (same color used in the above step).  Press stamp onto Grungeboard.
  • Ink large leaf stamp with Archival Ink (same color used in the above step).  Press stamp onto Grungeboard.
  • Give the ink a couple of minutes to dry and soak into Grungeboard.
  • Using Tim Holtz/Tonic Scissors, cut out all pieces of Grungeboard.  Honestly, these are the best scissors to use with Grungeboard!  If you don't have them, you'll want 'em ; )
  • Color flower petals with your favorite color Distress Ink.  I used 2 colors:  Spiced Marmalade towards the inside of each petal (closest to the center) and Mustard Seed towards the outside, giving each petal a "shadow and highlight".
  • Color arrow stem and large leaf with Peeled Paint Distress Ink.

Here's a Wendy Vecchi detail hint:  Using one of the Studio 490 background stamps, impress back of each flower with the stamp and Archival Ink.  Once dry, color in back of petal with coordinating color.  If you do this step, when you're ready to "roll" the petals, you'll see color and pattern on the underside as well.  Not that detail is one thing that sets Wendy apart from other stampers! Hats off to you friend and your detail work!

  • Using your thumb and forefinger, roll the tips of each flower petal towards the center of the flower.  This will give your petals dimension!  And now you can tell the difference between using chipboard and Grungeboard. Love the versatility of Grungeboard!
  • With either Ultimate Glue or Glossy Accents, adhere each flower to the other, using glue only in the center of the flower.  If you would like (another tip from Wendy) take a small piece of leftover grungeboard and layer between the center of the flower, using the grungeboard as a pop-up and adding even more dimension to your flowers.
  • Let glue dry.

Paper background:

  • Choose 2 different coordinating papers and tear edges.  Make sure one paper design is larger than the other piece so you can layer the papers and still see each individual design.
  • Add a coordinating color of Distress Ink to the edges (both front and back)
  • "Ruffle" or curl up the edges of both papers.  If you get teensy tears in the edges while doing this - woo hoo! - you're doing a great job!

  • Glue papers to canvas, making sure you can still see the canvas background.

  • Tie ribbon around test tube (I used tulle).

  • With Glossy Accents, adhere tube to front of papers/canvas.

  • Slip flower stem into glass tube.  Adhere flowers to top of stem.

  • Add Stickles to flower center if desired (or a button)

  • Add large leaf to back of tube (Note: I rolled the side of the leaf as well.) Adhere all with Glossy Accents.

Hope you enjoy this little project.  It's fun, easy and quick!
