Yesterday . . .

(no, I'm not going to break into song)

I was working at For Keeps Sake when

. . . . . . . . . . the brand new

. . . . . . . . . . . . . Graphic 45

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .was delivered

WOW! Gorgeous.

A customer friend came in and we started looking at Graphic 45's Steampunk Debutante line and she asked what Steampunk was.

Steampunk art became popular in the 1980's and 1990's.  Based on designs from the *steam powered* era, the genre includes Victorian images from the 19th century with (what was considered then) futuristic technology.  So in Graphic 45's line, you'll notice lots of gears and drawings of metal pieces that were/are used in technology.  It's romance meets science fiction; Victorian costumes meets machinery.

Found this definiton:  "the retro version of cyberpunk".

If you're a collage artist or jewelry maker, you've probably done something in the style of Steampunk and didn't realize it.  Here's a great site for Steampunk jewelry:

Tim Holtz does some of his artwork in the style of Steampunk.  If you've been in his classes and altered jewelry or put some of his collage pieces together, you know what I mean.

 

 

 

Found Objects . . .

Recently, I found some old ledgers at an antique store in Augusta MO.  They were calling my name and so, priced right, I had to bring them home.  Thinking I would do something with them for a class, they're still sitting on a shelf.  And I'm still thinking . . .

Here's the cover of one of them:

Someone wrote on the front cover in blue pencil "1968", the year I graduated from high school.  So you see, I had to have this one!  On the inside cover is a price tag from Ben Franklin marked $1.25

And on one of the pages, someone's 1968 budget which reads:

Can you imagine the total cost of your bills each month at $137.50 ?  And I don't see a house payment or rent money, so I'm assuming these people had their house paid off.  And no college bills.

And most importantly . . . where is their scrap budget?

I scrapped in 1968. Did you?

Makes me nostalgic for the good-ole-days . . . yet I love the technology of today.

paper that won't get all crackly brown unless I ink it and crumble it myself . . .

colors that won't fade . . .

This week's challenge from Simon Says Stamp & Show . . .

Get your creative mojo workin' and join me over at Simon Says Stamp & Show.  This week's challenge was one of my faves because it involved my friend Wendy Vecchi. 

The challenge: Create something in the style of Wendy Vecchi/Studio 490.

Here's what I created for the

Simon Says Stamp & Show  Design Team. 

 

 

I first saw Wendy's work at CHA and immediately fell in love with her style.  With artful layers, Wendy designs projects that are so very detailed, but yet do-able.  She is a very giving artist in that she will happily share how she does each project and technique.

Wendy then taught at my LSS where we became fast friends.  We've attended Ranger University, Holiday Hideaway and shopping trips together and had a blast.  Not only is she talented, but she is super fun!

Since I first saw Wendy's art at the CHA Maya Road booth, my project includes all Maya Road chipboard products with a few of their metal flowers and one of their pins (crystal only) thrown in for good measure.  And, of course, hardly a Wendy-type project would be complete without a flower - this one made out of one of Wendy's favorite things, grungepaper.

Just a couple of years ago, Wendy began creating her very own line of stamps with the introduction of Studio 490.  This summer at CHA, Wendy has introduced Art Parts.  Can't wait to get my hands on those!

Card-iology:

Combine two of your favorite things - cardmaking and techniques - in this once-a-month class that promises to put the "snap, crackle and pop" into your greeting cards.  Always $12 per class.

All Things Wendy:

You know how For Keeps Sake loves Wendy Vecchi and her Studio 490 line of stamps! In this class you will "shake, rattle and roll" your way through a creative project a la Wendy, taught by either Sue, Missy or me.  $20 per month.

Alter This!:

Join Missy, Sue or me as we share tips, techniques and tricks for altering everyday objects. We'll search for our favorite piece, make some alterations with paper, ephemera and/or stamps to create a project sure to inspire.  $20 per month.

 

I'm first up with a Card-iology class on Thursday, September 2 from 6 pm - 8 pm.  For Keeps Sake just received a new line of stamps that are sure to be Fall favorites.  Here's what's planned:

In this class we'll use

three Northwoods stamps

to create

3 different cards

using

Memento Ink

Copic Markers

+

Stickles

Join me as we practice *coloring*

using shadows, mid-values and highlights

to give these cards zing!

Use the techniques learned in this class to

add dimension to any project requiring color.

Normally . . .

I would stamp a domino with Staz-On and color with Ranger Adirondack markers

until . . .

Karen B showed me otherwise.

• first sanded the domino with 600 grade sandpaper (don't skip this step. the pencil needs some "tooth.)
• stamp the image onto the domino with black Staz-On. let ink dry.
• color the image with colored pencils
• use a blending pencil to blend colors if desired
• seal with spray sealer

Here's Karen's Santa stamp

and then I tried one

with one of Joni's (Mrs. O'Leary's) stamps.

Not sure what stamp Karen used but I used just a piece of an image of a larger stamp called "Angel in Training".

Once I had the color the way I wanted, I used a white gel pen to

highlight the ruffled collar and hat

and a gold pen for the buttons.

Takes about 5 minutes - no kiddin'!

I'm hooked!

 

Saturday's Itsy Bitsy Tag Class . . .

I'm very excited to share this class with you.  Direct from talented Joni Russell's studio, these are so adorable and full of good things.  I'm sure, once you see how easy these are to put together, you'll love making dozens more.

CYI + Stamp Club = Great Evening with Friends . . .

Very happy to be back in my own element with my little group of friends at CYI and Stamp Club.  I missed everyone last month as Bill and I were on the road in Northern California.

My gals at CYI did not disappoint with their adorable match box trades.  All those tiny treasures tucked into one drawer!  So much fun.
