Since my last post about Nancyland, I have had several people contact me about organizing stuff. Here's a couple more ways I organize the little things:
These clear boxes can be found in any hobby/craft store in the jewelry department. The trick is to get the boxes that have stable dividers. If you get the ones where you can move the dividers around, all those little pieces get caught underneath the dividers and you end up with a mess!
I love these blue containers but can't remember where I got them. I've had them forever.
Paper Storage:
Oh my word I think I've tried every kind of paper storage imaginable. The first type was the horizontal-stacks-on-the-shelf variety. That didn't work for me. It works if you're buying packs of 25 of the same design (how many of us do that!) but if you purchase just one or two sheets of a design - not so much. You have to take the pile of papers off the shelf, go through each one, neatly stack the papers back up and file them on the shelf again. Too much work.
Instead, I purchased this used file cabinet from a used office supply place. It's not your average file cabinet as the drawers are deep (about 13" or 14" deep). It took me months of going back to the same store over and over with a ruler until I found it. I think it may have been used in a doctor's office for deep files. In any case, it holds two piles of 12x12 papers.
I've had it for years and it works for me. The papers are stacked vertically and in color variations (yellows together, reds, pinks, greens, etc). This system allows me to go through the papers without taking them out of the drawers. I just ruffle through them until I find the color and pattern I need.
I like that they're out of the light when not being used. I find that even the lights in the basement will turn papers a different color after prolonged exposure (even though they are acid free).
The cardstock I have is stored in the same way but in a rolling cart near my workdesk. 12x12 in one and 8.5x11 in another.
Viva la Nancyland!
